Sustainable Tourism Management Practices of Dream Patagonia

                               

Since hotels need to consider whether or not its operation and facilities are sustainable, tourists also need choose hotels carefully in order to reduce negative impacts to local communities, the nature, and cultural heritages. Hotel Dreams De La Patagonia in Coyhaique, Chile was selected as a venue of Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) conference 2017 in Chile. During this conference, I, my fellow, and Dr. David W. Randle were staying at this hotel. This hotel is located near the nature including mountains. The main attraction around the hotel is natural recreations such as hiking and climbing mountains, and also the City of Coyhaique owns traditional crafts and the historical architecture. Moreover, the hotel has own attractions such as concerts and casino. As we can realize from above, the hotel is highly attracting certain numbers of tourists. In this blog, I share what positive management the hotel has to be sustainable and provide recommendation based on my experience to the hotel.

During I was staying at Hotel Dream De La Patagonia, I could discover few positive sustainable tourism managements without talking with hotel’s manager. This discovery is significant for guest education because guests usually do not ask the hotel about their sustainable management. What I could discover is less water pressure of shower, lights with automatic censor to save electricity usage at corridors, a card device equipped on wall in order to turn on room lights, designated smoking area outside of buildings, separated flushing toilet system between urine and feces, and educational information boards regarding recommended behavior as sustainable tourists on each guest floor. Also, a restaurant in the hotel do not serve any plastic materials such as plastic cups, straws, and plastic containers. As we can identify from these approaches, the hotel definitely consider water conservation, reduction of energy usage, prevention of plastic use, and sustainable education. In addition, the hotel also provide pre-arrival survey and evaluating survey to its guests. The pre-arrival survey offers transportation from airport to its guests if they need. Overall, I felt comfortable to stay at the hotel. However, the hotel’s operation has not had perfect sustainable management yet because of non-recycle cans in guest rooms, plastic bottle in minibar of each guest room, and a large number of free parking spots. The biggest problem of the hotel is that most information from the hotel are provided in only Spanish. Therefore, international tourists, who cannot speak Spanish, gain less information than Spanish speakers. It does not own equality between guests.

As my recommendation to the hotel, they need to prepare multiple translation for its information. Obviously, local communities do not provide information described by different languages. Therefore, at least the hotel need to prepare sufficient communication tools with international tourists. Moreover, the hotel’s website is also posted in only Spanish. So, international tourists cannot gain any hotel’s information from its website. It is weakness of the hotel. Thus, the hotel also need to add language translation into its website in order to share its information equally with all guests.
